Movies and series filmed in Crete
Who does not remember Anthony Quinn’s famous sirtaki, accompanied by the unforgettable music of Mikis Theodorakis, in the award-winning film «Zorba the Greek»? While swimming in the deep blue waters of Stavros beach in Chania, images and moments from the now classic film by Michael Cacoyannis, which even won three Oscars, come to mind. But it is not only «Zorba the Greek». Crete has been the setting for the shooting of several films, both Greek and international productions, many of which have won top awards at Greek and international festivals.
More recently, the television series «The Island», one of the most successful drama series on Greek television that is based on the bestseller of the same name by Victoria Hislop, was filmed in Crete, specifically in Spinalonga and the opposite village of Plaka in Lasithi. Watching the series will make you feel like you are travelling back in time for a while and that you are transported to another era, as the famous British writer, now a naturalised Greek, describes the atmosphere of times past.
